Abrahamic Covenant

The Abrahamic Covenant refers to the promises God establishes with nations">Abraham concerning descendants, land, blessing, covenant relationship, and blessing extending to the nations.
It forms one of the major covenantal foundations of the biblical story.

The covenant develops across several passages rather than appearing in only one moment:
• Genesis 12:1–3
• Genesis 13:14–17
• Genesis 15
• Genesis 17
• Genesis 22:15–18

God promises covenant • blessing • blessing for the nations">Abraham:
• a great nation
• a great name
• descendants
• land
• divine blessing
• divine protection
• kings
• covenant relationship
• blessing for all families of the earth
These promises develop throughout the rest of Scripture.
Genesis 15
Genesis 15 contains a formal covenant ceremony.
God alone passes between the divided animals in the symbolic form of smoking fire and flame.
This places extraordinary emphasis on God's commitment to His promise.
Genesis 17
Genesis 17 emphasizes:
• Abraham's new name
• multiplication of descendants
• kings
• the land
• circumcision as covenant sign

The Israel from slavery in Egypt under Torah.">Moses.">Exodus is later interpreted as God remembering His covenant with:
• Abraham
• Isaac
• Jacob

Gentile believers do not receive an unrelated set of promises.
Through Messiah, they participate in blessings rooted in God's covenantal promises to covenant • blessing • blessing for the nations">Abraham.
This does not necessarily erase the covenant's specific promises concerning Abraham's physical descendants and the land.
